I intended to get back to the Maryhill story, but felt compelled to share a little treasure with you. I went to a holiday open house at one of my favorite antique shops last night. Everything was beautifully decorated and embellished, and on one of the tables was a tree decorated with these beautiful antique fabric slippers. They were meant to be tree ornaments, but I will display mine indefinitely. It was made by Elizabeth Johnson.

From a small bio of her work, I would like to share with you a quote: ” In a home of limited income her mother made just about everything but the shoes. That part of her mother’s fairy dust must have been sprinkled over Elizabeth, as she loves and has always loved creating things by hand. Through the years she has explored the worlds of painting, drawing, pottery, batik, basket construction, weaving, and various creative assemblages.”
The slipper measures 7″ x 2 3/4″,and is made of antique textiles and trims. Elizabeth also creates the most magical crowns that would grace the head of anyone willing to be royalty for an imaginative moment. And her shell mirrors and furniture are works of art.

On the back of her slipper is her stamp. The one I chose had an added embellishment, a flower. What a grand and delightful way to use worn and wonderful old textiles and embellishments. I came home with so much inspiration. Tomorrow I will get back to the final posting of Maryhill.
Oh that is sweet! I leave my favorite “ornaments” out year round. They make me too happy to put away in a box.
Fit for a princess! beautifully done! I agree with Deb G about keeping ornaments out all year. What ever makes me smile…
stays!
Arn’t the colors wonderful but my feet are too big. Oh well!!!
You mentioned a stamp? Is it that sort of square out line on top or is her signature the flower. Either way, I am charmed.
And may I chime in for leaving my favorite ornaments out all year as well.
The stamp is in the corner to the left “EL”, and the flower is simply an added treat to the back. Yes, let’s leave our favorite decorations out to enchant us all year long.
This is quite a day for inspiration! These ornaments are beautiful, very beautiful. Can’t wait to read about Maryhill tomorrow. Thanks for sharing these beautiful little treasures.
I will finish Maryhill tomorrow (Monday). I have been side-tracked and need to do a little more reading before I can write an accurate post.
beautiful!
Digress away! I love it. We have lots of time. This little slipper is too beautiful to take a back seat to another story in progress…it could be a Persian fairy princess’s slipper, and by posting when you did, its owner can finally know where her foot wear has so naughtily disappeared. You better keep an eye on your new treasure, it might diasappear in the night. And now my friend Lynn and I are planning a trip to Goldendale to see the fashion dolls. See what you started? J.M.
That is great that you and your friend Lynn are going to the exhibit. I am sure you know that today was their last day for the season until they re-open the middle of March, I believe. I think this is because the gorge can get such nasty ice and snow storms. You will have to do a post on your experience. What fun to think you might see this in person!
what an amazing work of art. i just love it.
