I know that Fall is about to envelope me when I start looking at the things in the house that need to be done. The list is always very long. One has to pick and choose. I am also one of those people (a trait I have carried forever) that likes to do things myself. I always carry that mental calculator in my head. If I do it myself, I can save $$$. And so it goes. However, my husband and I kept looking at our stairwell thinking we could do it. He is a trooper and will support me in my sometimes outlandish schemes, but increasingly this job seemed one for “the painters”.
I picked the colors and they did the job. Then we had the issue of the unfinished bookcases. Feeling fearless, as I am increasingly wont to do, I arrived at the colors above as the duo to compliment the color of the walls. The lavender paint ship is called “cut velvet”, that alone would have sold me on the color no matter what the hue. The green is quite clever, “science experiment”. Well, yes. It is not exactly science, but it is my experiment. Now to the bookshelves and the wall background.

I chose an oil-based paint because the last time I painted a furniture piece, it took forever for the paint to “set”. And the sweet, young man and the paint store said the oil paints were much improved. I was convinced, and he seemed knowledgeable. Besides, I was, by that time, thinking of a zillion other colors I wanted to use just by looking at all the paint chips. I did not want to linger on the tedium of oil versus acrylic.

The one on the left is Cut Velvet. Yum. And the one on the right is Science Experiment (why do I keep wanting to change the name?). I like the combo. It suits my mood these days and my husband says it brings him right back to his childhood when he used to eat those huge oblong, pastel, crunchy, sugary candies filled with that marshmallow type goo. I was thinking more in terms of Greece, azure-colored water, lavender sunsets, and green foliage. He likes candy so I can understand the correlation.
Note:: For the first time with WordPress, I have had a glitch in this post. All the photos of the dresses disappeared as well as the descriptions. Not only did I lose the dresses, I also lost the entire post from the entries as well as the drafts. I am going to resend it and see if it appears again. Not sure what to do with the rest of the missing post. I apologize for this strange mishap. I am still searching for the dress to wear to my daughter’s wedding.
I’m a great believer in doing it myself too! I also find it fascinating that our choice of colours changes with both the season of the year and the season of ourselves.
I love the silver dress-but knowing how slender you are, I reckon you would look stunning in the middle purple one. In my humble opionion, I think you might be too “understated” in the silver. But that may be what you want. Lovely choice to have.
I am still trying to decide what to do. Not an easy answer it seems. I am leaning now towards making the dress. More research in the next few days.
Love those colors! I’m going to paint one corner of the living room a shade of green pretty close to “science experiment.” I think the next thing I’m going to paint is the stairwell and stairs. I still love the idea you posted about each step being a different color. Not sure what color to do the walls. It’s very dark except for about one hour a day.
Have fun with the dress choice. That’s a tough one!
I think you have the same feeling of adventure and free-spirit as I do when it comes to color. No rules, just do what you love!
I too love the colors! We did our kitchen/dining area in orange a few years ago, and we love it, it really works for a kitchen.
So how did the oil vs. acrylic do for the shelves? Does it make the paint ‘sturdier’?
I am actually considering painting our kitchen orange too. In fact, I have three paint chips on the wall in orange tones.
I love the colors. It always feels so bold to make a big slash of color. And I am just like you. I can envison myself doing just about anything but not put on a new roof. After I broke my elbow flying off a ladder, I am a little hesitant with that. But look at all the wonderful color you get to feast your eyes on!!!! I love it.
I guess that is why I no longer want to ski and head down a mountain. Injuries at my age do not look too exciting. So I am content to be more careful and less rebellious. However, when it comes to color, I say just do whatever you love and whatever excites you. There are no mistakes (personal opinion).
