It has been a slow, easy weekend with lots of rain and wind. I decided to not be ambitious about anything. I guess I have been sleeping more than usual and meandering through the last two days. We had the first fire of the season tonight. We ate comfort food for dinner, polenta with sauteed vegetables, a salad from the garden, and a very decadent chocolate cake for dessert. Yum.

Our tomatoes are not ripening. We have lots of green ones, but this one was ready for our dinner. How could we ever complain about green tomatoes after we discovered this one hiding underneath the rest? Unexpected treasures are the best on slow, easy, quiet days. Tomorrow will be more constructed and faster-paced because it suits my current drive for something I can’t quite get my arms around yet.
I can almost feel the warmth of that fire on my face, and taste that wonderful homegrown tomato.
May the peacefulness continue!

Such peace comes also from warm and comforting people who stop by to visit. Glad you left a comment.
I was wondering about the strange color of the tomato. And I thought you had “greened” it with photoshop. But I think the perfect red of our “industry” tomatoes is rather suspicious. We should come back to those in strange colors. I love yellow tomatoes.
I too think the perfect red definitely lends itself to suspicion. I did buy some “early girls” that were bright red at a local farmer’s market however. Heirloom tomatoes have unusual colors as a rule. Yellow tomatoes are so pretty in a salad mixed with the greens.
ah. you grow heirloom tomatoes too. looks just like the one i cut for salad last night. mine was a black crim. your’s. the same? here, the month of rain in the early season and now a tomato blight is playing havoc with yield. we joke and say our garden tomatoes are running at $47/pound!! at the farmer’s marked in town tomatoes are……$3.50 a pound. unheard of…….
i felt the slow-ness of your day…….loved it. and yes. we are getting to close to having a fire warm our evenings here too.
When one lights the first fire in the fireplace or woodstove, then I guess we know we are close to the change of season and chilly weather. I will welcome it for sure.
Slow is the best way to heal.
If I had a wood fire I would have lit it last night too. What a change in the weather, cool this morning too.
I finally gave up and made a mini hoop house for my large tomatoes. Much better results this year.
We put cages around our tomatoes. Is this similar to your mini hoop house? I think perhaps we planted them too late. When I walk through the local neighborhoods I find that other tomatoes are getting red, so it could just be our poor timing. Maybe I should resort to fried green tomatoes even though I do not fry food as a rule.
It’s a large metal frame that my dad welded together with some scraps. It’s large enough I can stand in it if I’m bent over. It’s about 5 feet wide by 7 feet long. Its covered with greenhouse plastic. It’s been up to 90 degrees on a couple days. I vent it on the hottest days since tomatoes stop blooming at 90 degrees. I made the mistake of putting most of my cherry tomatoes in there too. The one out in the garden is just as productive…. Next year just the large canning tomatoes are going in the hoop house.
How fascinating. I am very intrigued. Maybe at some point you might post a photo on your blog so we could all see this. I think sometimes our weather is like yours and not really as hot for as many days as the tomatoes would like. Next year we will have to try something like this in hopes that we have beaucoup red ones.
ah, you finally built the fire….feels so good, that first one.
it was a strange garden season this year. the climate has changed so much i think i will have to rethink what i plant….
That first fire is so comforting and cozy. Even the cats seem to recognize it as special and different. I am ready to hunker down and be in the fall and winter mode.
The climate is changing and I do think some plants we need to rethink.
Seeing your fire makes me look forward to our first one also…we still have the air conditioning on…although it is only 68 right now. Autumn is a lovely season.
Fried green tomatoes are lovely…or you could place your tomatoes in a paper bag to ripen them
I am sorry to hear that you have been under the weather. Hope you get well soon.
I am battling the worst allergies I have ever had…started in the winter and still has be in it’s grips. That is why I have been so erratic in visiting my blog friends.
When I start feeling sorry for myself….I think of all the people that are really suffering.
I am nearly completely recovered, but now have given this nasty bug to my poor husband. We went to the vitamin store to stock up for winter!
I am so sorry to hear you are still battling allergies. They are absolutely no fun. I found quitting dairy pretty much banished them for me, but not sure if that would work for you too. Hope you feel better soon!!
Hi, I was just reading how we should give ourselves permission to have a slow day. That is probably just what you need to heal. The photo of the tomato was wonderful. You have such a feel for the visual. I really enjoy it. Rest and breathe.
Thank you for the guilt-free permission to be a little lazy. I think it has worked. Slow days seem to be days we all need to plan for periodically, almost like a calendar date!
