Today I made some sample cards of the sequence of colors I want to use for some of the borders in this project. I started with the cotton and then added the silks and last the velvets. I guess I need guides because I work intuitively and would never remember the format unless I put them on a card.

These are the cotton pieces ready for piecing.

On the left are the silk hexagons and on the right the velvets. I have always avoided velvet because of the nap and the constant shifting of the fibers, but I want to try this luxurious fabric to see if handling it by hand would be easier than piecing by machine. I have made velvet clothing with much frustration by machine, so I am hoping the hand piecing will bring a little peace.
a little piece/peace yes. sorry i haven’t been commenting….crazy times.
I understand. When times are crazy sometimes it is even difficult to get a post written, so visiting other blogs and making comments is just one more added stress. You have much on your plate these days with decisions, work, etc.
Save the color cards for a future project! Interesting notes about the velvet….I haven’t ever worked with it, or any other ‘nap’ fabrics, so that is new info to me, thank you!
{i did once work with a fake fur my mom wanted me to turn into ‘harry the dirty dog’…it came out ‘creature from the black lagoon’. my mom actually gave it to my niece, who hid it at the bottom of her bed, under the covers!}
What a funny story about the “dog”. I guess fur is one of those things that defies molding or resists sculpture. I have never worked with it. You were brave to try!
I love velvet and can’t wait to see the project. I hope you don’t mind that I put your link in my post for Inspire Me Thursday as the subject was petals and the first thing I thought of was your lovely piece of art petal coat. I wanted to make sure they saw it in case you didn’t share it! I love it.(they will go directly to that post too).
Thank you so much for doing this link. I will go over and look at it. I have a beret I made with somewhat of the same technique. It really turned out rather funny like a big flower on top of a head!
