My cocoon tightens, colors tease,
I’m feeling for the air;
A dim capacity for wings
Demeans the dress I wear.
~~Emily Dickinson, Poem 1099
Chrysalis by Kim Todd
My workspace is now organized into piles….piles of trims, select textiles, beads, odds and ends of pieces. This hanging above I acquired over twelve years ago, and now it would seem to be the perfect choice for this project. If I had gone out to look for it, I never would have discovered it. It is silk stenciled with some kind of paint. It is sandwiched like a quilt with batting and a cotton backing. The silk varies in color due to aging and the patina I love. I am searching “feeling for the air”, what will light on my dream and guide me to some translation?

In my search I came across this silk piece that I had stenciled over five years ago. It was during another Fortuny obsession phase. I worked in the garage on a large table with gold metallic paint and the stencil and printed and sometimes overprinted. I want to work this into the design some elements that brings the disparate pieces together.

Fortuny

What lovely fabrics! I just love the potential in materials. I can see why the Fortuny was inspiring.
That orangey silk is wonderful. It looks so soft and luxurious that maybe if you wrapped your self within, you would find your wings. Lovely.
If I wrapped myself as if in a cocoon, I might find my wings. Such insight. I love this imagery.
ooooooh . . .breathtaking!
