When I finished the turtle a few posts back with paper piecing, I decided, at some point, I would try piecing without paper. I was inspired and encouraged here.. The shapes above are apple cores, rather large ones to accommodate the design. I was so impressed with the ease and efficiency of this method. There was no basting or cutting many shapes, as I used one shape for all and simply ironed the seams down around the piece, and then removed the paper. Then I started what iffing. I liked the blue and white indigo, but wanted something to break up the monochromatic look. What if I added a touch of color here and there.

This seemed to satisfy my desire to break up the solid appearance of the design. I have yet to start the actual sewing process. I found another look similar in a book on Japanese design.

And then a tablecloth with the same idea…

I am working to create fabric that I can use in some sculptural form. I have no idea where I am going with this as I have not done anything like this before. If I can navigate amidst the confusion of color, cloth, and my own lack of experience with plastic art, I am planning to create a tangible piece of art with a new method. But I am sure it has been done somewhere in the world! I just haven’t discovered it yet.
Wow! I’m really looking forward to seeing what you do with this.
I may not be able to bring this off, but if I fail I think it will allow transition into another design. I can only know through experimenting I guess.
It is challenging to follow some inner guide that does not give a road map. I am stuggling with that now, so your comments have aided me not to feel so forlorn. However, you have the courage to post about it.
I seem to manage to sometimes make things more difficult than they should be. Yes, I have had thoughts that perhaps I should not be posting about something unless I know I can do it, as failure might have to be admitted. However, I have always worked in isolation, and I think blogging is a great medium because it grants us exposure without faces. Perhaps this will help me be more confident and less shy.
i am not sure but it is quite difficult to sew curved pieces together using the overcast method. or are you sewing them down to a foundation? or doing regular seaming?
I am going to try to overcast them. All the edges are turned under, so regular seaming would be a bit difficult. If this does not work, I will try the foundation. I intend to sew some today, so I will let you what method worked best.
I love this and the uniqueness makes it even more lovely. Can’t wait to see the beautiful piece you will end up with! Gorgeous. Trying to stretch our wings and try something new is never failure it is pioneering! Good luck with your project!
I really appreciate your positive outlook. What a great way to look at experimentation. Thank you!
