Our new turtle is already trying to become friends with our youngest cat, Willie. Shortly after this was taken Willie jumped down to get away from this multi-colored creature. I haven’t decided what to name it, but I think it should be a girl since I am trying to identify with her life these days.

Reading about turtles, I have concluded that she must be a land tortoise. This species are strictly herbivorous, unlike the freshwater or semi-terrestrial turtles that are carnivores as well as herbivores. And since I am a vegetarian, and mostly a vegan, she certainly must be a land turtle. No turtle soup here.

It is odd how creating something that sculpturally represents a living creature takes on an imaginative presence. What seemed symbolic becomes tangible and intimate.

The shell was the beginning, a practice in paper piecing.

I like her tail the best. I think she should have a name, but all I can think of is recluse. Yet there is something to be said for the serenity of solitude. I manage to find myself in that space several times a week and it fits quite well. Right now the turtle is sitting on top of a favorite small sofa in the living room where I go to read and be quiet. I think it will be a nice reminder of slowing down, taking the time to reflect, and giving myself an hour to be…….just simply be.
She is delightful. She is something that a child will love and examine in the twilight before a nap.
The colors are perfect. Did you intend it for a child or was it just a project to practice paper piercing?
I found that the stuffed animals that I made, I had to just close my eyes after I gave them. The child has to “grok in fullness” as Michael Valentine said in Stanger in Strange Land said.
Close your eyes and give it away…how true! After I finished it I immediately thought of my granddaughter and how she would love it. I think I may keep it for awhile, just to understand the depth of its lessons.
i think this is great, like a mentor.
The perfect mentor for me these days.
She is beautiful.
I love the turtle! All the beautiful bright colors and you are right the tail is wonderful. Great job on the turtle and I enjoyed your post about her too.
Sweet, sweet turtle! I think I shall call her “Lola.” Love the pieced shell. What a great pin cushion Lola would make – but, um – I would have a problem sticking pins in her – THAT just wouldn’t feel right!
Lola is good. A pin cushion? That is a great idea, but maybe making her smaller. I am becoming attached to her.
Love the turtle. Turtles are on my list of projects that I must get around to making. Thanks!
This turtle was so much fun to make. It could be and addictive venture.
